Axial Expansion Joint :
This is the simplest assembly in family of expansion joint. It consists of a bellow element with end connections. It is used for axial movement only in pipe configurations. However, it can also absorb small amounts of other two types of basic movements viz. lateral and angular.
Universal Expansion Joint:
Two bellows connected by a common connector or centre piece, is called Universal expansion joint. These are used to absorb large amount of lateral deflections. In addition to this, Universal expansion joints can also compensate other two types of movements viz. axial and angular. Double expansion joint is different from Universal expansion joint.
Single Hinge Expansion Joint :
A hinge Expansion joint consists of single bellow element with a pair of hinges which permits angular deflections in one plane. The hinge pins, hinge plates are designed to restrain pressure thrust. Slotted hinges assembly can also be provided to allow some amount of axial deflection.
Universal Hinge Expansion Joint :
A universal hinge expansion joint consist of a universal bellow with two pairs of hinges. This type of expansion joint is used to accommodate large amount of lateral deflection in one plane. By providing a special arrangement of hinge box, the universal hinge expansion joint can also accommodate angular movement and lateral deflection in more than one plane.
Gimbal Expansion Joint :
A gimbal expansion joint can absorb angular deflection in any plane. It consists of two pairs of hinges connected to a common floating ring. Gimbal Expansion joint can consist of a single bellow, where there is no lateral deflection, or two bellows connected by a common connector where it can permit a lateral deflection also. The pairs of hinges, gimbal pin and the gimbal floating rings should be designed to restrain the pressure thrust.
Fabricated Expansion Joints :
These types of expansion joint are used in low pressure systems and these are a cost effective substitute for such systems. These can be made in large diameters and from various type of metals. Moreover, “fabricated” bellows can be made of various shapes viz. polygon, rectangular, etc.
Rectangular Type Expansion Joint :
These type of expansion joints are made from press brake forming. Flexatherm can manufacture rectangular expansion joint having no size limitation. These type of expansion joint are provided with various configuration of corners viz. round, single miter, double miter and camera corners.
Inline Pressure Balance Expansion Joint:
An Inline pressure balance expansion joint is designed to absorb axial, lateral and angular deflection, while restraining the pressure thrust exerted by the internal pressure and without a change in direction of the piping. The pressure thrust is restrained by the tie rods arrangement, which connects the line bellows and the balancing bellows. It is a constant volume system, so the Main Anchors can be designed as intermediate anchors, and function only to direct the thermal expansion of the pipe towards the expansion joint.
Elbow Type Pressure Balance Expansion Joint:
It is a special design of expansion joint which restrains the pressure thrust and also balances it so that the thrust force on the main anchors or the adjacent load sensitive equipment can be reduced significantly or eliminated. This type of expansion joint consists of a balancing bellows and two/one line bellows.
